I bought Song Quest for my daughter's birthday, in part, because it said "For the child who keeps asking for the next Harry Potter."
Well, it's not quite Harry Potter, but it's still a good read.
This is the story of two pre-teen kids, Rialle and Kherron, caught up in a battle way beyond their experience or knowledge. Both cope admirably, of course.
They are Singers, able to communicate with magical creatures and able to control and influence people through a set of magic songs.
Not quite as compelling as Harry Potter, Song Quest is still a riveting read. I read through it in one sitting.
There are some violent scenes early in the book, involving the killing and vivisection of merlee (mermaid type people), and the Singers use their magic to harm others, as well as help.
This book is most appropriate for kids 9 or older, but anyone who could handle Goblet of Fire won't be bothered by the unpleasantness in this.
