Sophie is the eldest of three sisters and, as the eldest, she knows she is set for a life of no adventure and no magic. She resigns herself to working in her father's hat shop.
One morning, the Witch of the Waste comes in to buy a hat and is, well, displeased is a mild discription. So she turns Sophie into an old woman.
Shocked, Sophie hobbles off into the country side and leaps on board a moving castle...home of Howl the wizard, his apprentice Michael and Calcifer, the fire demon.
"Old age" imbues Sophie with determination and stubborness that she previously lacked. She settles herself into the castle (without asking) and becomes entangled in magic and adventure.
This book is funny and charming...a wonderful treat for a Saturday afternoon, or any afternoon.
