I loved this book as a child. I read it many times (starting in the 4th grade). I didn't discover it was the first of a series until I was an adult.
Lewis Barnavelt becomes in embroiled in a years-old battle with long-dead evil wizard. I listened to this book on tape with my children and some of the material towards the end was a bit intense and scary for them (ages 4 and 6), but they still enjoyed the book.

It is about a boy whose parents are dead and he was told not to find the spot where the clock was in the wall. It was really neat, especially for rainy days. It was sort of scary when he found the clock in the wall.
