How to assemble the Bonfire quilt (black & white version)

This is the smaller quilt on the front cover of Sizzling Quilts from a Simple Block. The effect of the outer border of blocks is interesting, but it is tricky. Calculations are on page 156. Study those directions, plus page 37 (basic Stitch & Flip technique) and Project 13.

1. Make 16 inner blocks. Follow general directions on pages 37, 39 and 84 (Project 13, Steps 1-8).

2. Assemble those blocks, four sets of four blocks, into a quilt top. (Step 9, page 84)

3. Add a border with triangles so the pinwheels continue into the border (Step 10, page 84). You'll need eight of the long border pieces.

4. Make 20 blocks for borders. Use the same Dark fabric as used in the 16 inner blocks. Replace the Light fabric with another bright or dark color, blue in this case. These are not complete blocks, so study the diagrams.

Make 12 blocks which are 3/4 as wide as usual (I put an X by them in the diagrams). Sizes of strips are on page 156. Basically you omit the D strips, making only three panels and four short pieces of the D fabric.

Make eight blocks which are 3/4 as tall as usual. These panels are shorter and narrower, but there are four of them.

Cut sections 2" wide as before.

5. Assemble the quilt like this. Notice which blocks have the X.

This sketch is for black/white printers. The colored version matches the photo better.
