Super Sixteen

A Woodpile quilt design by Anita Hallock (about 30" square after borders)

This is a variation of Project 1 in Sizzling Quilts from a Simple Block. Since there are two color schemes (eight blocks of each), this version uses only 15" strips. Blocks will be 5" square (Normal scale, four steps).

Supplies:

  • Cutting tools: rotary cutter, mat, grids (nice sizes: 6" x 24" and  6" square)
  • Sewing machine with neutral color thread
  • Regular sewing notions
  • Pressing surface and iron
  • Optional: Glue Stick for mock-up block, Polaroid camera for snapshots of trial arrangements.
  • Fabric:
    100% cotton, small or medium prints.
    A kit containing one strip of each of these (If no kits are provided, make a mock-up block and cut strips as given in Step 1):

  • 4 Dark fabrics in one color scheme
  • 4 Dark fabrics in a compatible color scheme
  • 6 Light fabrics (or only three, if you wish)
  • Inner borders: 1/8 to 1/4 yard, Outer borders: 1/3 to 1/2 yard
  • Lining: 1 yard
  • Batting: 34" square
  • Binding 1/4 yard
  • 1. Cut 14 strips, if kits aren't available. (Use the mock-up block as a guide.)
