ESCAPE
Escape
narrow rooms
white tiled hallways
echoing stairwells
Elbows press against
hard surfaces
devoid of curve or color
Heart pounds
Fear, desire
Make a dash
Outrun red dog’s bark
Into vacant lot
Untrimmed grasses
Rustle of small creatures
Shoulders begin to soften
Mind spacious
Legs gather speed
Lithe body, whereto?
Up’s the way
to gray boulders
sunning.
Keep on going.
Air thinning, cooler
Made it to the top of red hill
Skin moist from run
Torso expanded
Barely winded.
No blanket
No gear at all
Treeless campsite.
Guys in white tees,
Sweet eyes, whiff
of youth. Canteens
in disarray on ground.
No tents.
Stay the night
Lope back down in daylight
No return ever
to room
so narrow.
Escaped!
