History
Eugene/Springfield Asian, Asian-American Youth, ESAAY began October 2000.
Since the Eugene Celebration 2000, the Asian student music makers riding
on the Asian Council parade float which included;
School participants
from Churchill, South and Sheldon High Schools met after the parade at
a volunteer appreciation pizza gathering. The magic was there. The students
expressed interest in the start-up of a community-based Asian-American
Youth group. Sometimes we forget and do not see the growing number of
Asian-American youth in our community.
A lot of
interest was expressed from key community leaders and students at the
various local High Schools for the need and start-up of the Eugene/Springfield
Asian-American Youth (ESAAY) group. Initially there were strong possibilities
that this group could start-up and grow under the umbrella of the Asian
Council to maintain mutual benefits, sustainability and viability of the
Asian Councils graying non-profit, volunteer organization. The idea
and concepts of this community-based Asian youth group was presented to
our local Asian Council. The Asian Council voted unanimously to support
ESAAY group initially, in concept and substance under their umbrella.
The community response has been great!
