PacInfo Database-Driven Website SolutionsDatabase-Driven Website Solutions

Database-driven websites. Back-Office servers. ASP, SQL, Coldfusion, Perl, PHP. It's a dizzying array of products out there and making the right choice can be daunting if not down right tough. This is where the Development Team at PacInfo steps in and takes all of the mystery out of operating a database-driven website.

Click Me!Let's take a look at an example of one of our customized eCommerce Solutions. This first image is an example of the secure entrance to your private access point for managing your Website. When you set up your eCommerce Website with PacInfo, you are given the opportunity to choose your own unique 'User Name' and 'Password.' These secret words are then entered into the blank text fields as seen on the image to your right. Click on the image to see a larger version.

After you have entered the correct information, you'll be presented with a series of choices — each of which gathers information for the next administration page in the data gathering process. Think of it this way: You operate an odds-and-ends store and carry 1500 products. Recently, you decided to start carrying a new cooking product and need to place it in your online inventory. Adding your new product with PacInfos' eCommerce Administration tool is quick, easy and reliable. Let's take a look at the four easy steps involved in accomplishing this task.

Click Me! First, you would select "Add-Product" from the menu that is displayed on the screen as soon as you have completed the logon process. You are presented with a group of selections; each taking you into a category of functions for maintaining your site. In the example on the left, you'll see that there are five choices: Add-Product, Edit/Delete-Product, Add/Event, Edit/Delete-Event and Log Off. Each choice is clear and easy to understand. For our walkthrough, we are going to Add a new product to our Website.

Click Me!To add a product to your online inventory, you would select "Add-Product" from the sample menu (above). A new menu then appears as shown in the example on the right. At this point you select the major category your product would fit under, click your mouse on it and then press the "continue" button. As a result of selecting "continue" from the previous menu, you are present with a menu that takes you closer to the location where your product will reside in your online database.

NOTE: A database is a collection of pieces of information that when assembled by the eCommerce package, displays results in an easy to understand way. You can think of the pieces of information in a database as grains of salt in a salt shaker. The database is the shaker that keeps all of the grains inside. If we unscrew the top of the salt shaker, all of the grains dump out in a pile, making our food uneatable. If we leave the top on the shaker and shake salt out, only a few grains pour from the container in a controlled manner, making order out of potential chaos. This is how the database works. It allows only select information to pass or enter, always tailoring the results as we go further into its' orderly structure.

Click Me!Since the new product you have chosen to add to your inventory is a fur-lined pot, we will select that item from the choices presented in our selection window by clicking on it once, then press the "continue" button. At this point another window pops up, replacing the previous one. With each new window we see throughout this process, we are delving deeper and deeper into the online database, yet we don't need to know a thing about programming databases ourselves... the program is doing all of that for us!

Let's assume our product, the fur-lined pot, is made of Llama hair. It's a pretty simple matter at this point. We click on Llama from the choices available to us and then press the "continue" button.

Click Me!The final form is where you tell the database all about the Llama Fur-Lined Pot you are adding to your inventory. Some examples of what you might assign your product are shown below — but please keep in mind that these are only examples. PacInfo is able to create any number of areas where data can be entered according to your specific needs.

After filling in the fields as appropriate, you would click on the "Add" button that is located at the bottom of the form and the data would instantly be posted on your website, ready for your customers to view.
