Why borders on page 49 and 128 don't fit designs on pages 44 and 123

This is from page 21 of "Answers and Extras," the teacher's supplement to Sizzling Quilts from a Simple Block by Anita Hallock.

The direction of the seams

Woodpile blocks are usually turned at alternate directions as the quilt top is assembled, so hardly any seams have to line up. That's one thing that makes these blocks so easy.

Borders on page 49 and page 128 have a Vertical-Horizontal-Vertical-Horizontal pattern. I abbreviate that to V-H. See how they don't work with the H-V blocks on page 44 and page 123? The seams go the same direction in blocks that touch.


 
The H-V (Horizontal-Vertical) borders on page 45 and page 124 do fit the H-V blocks. The blocks that touch now have seams going the opposite direction.


 
 You can get around this by adding a plain border in between, as shown on page 71.
